ACORN CARP FISHERY
The Paddock
Fished: Sunday January 29 - 2012

A heavy overnight frost followed by a cold windless day and calm waters had most competitors reaching for light tackle and small baits.

The heaviest weight fell to last week’s winner Mike Chapman who romped home with a comfortable 49-3-0 catch of carp

Mike, who drew to fish peg 37 for the second week in succession said: “I simply carried on from where I left off the previous week.

“I baited up several swims with a bare minimum of free offerings and started catching regularly well within the first hour.

“My first fish came from the bottom of the near ledge at 3 metres and fell for double pinkie fished on a size 18 hook.

“I fed three or four caster or pinkie over the top after every put-in and by switching between the near and far ledge started catching good sized carp regularly.

“I took the lead well before the half way mark but there were several anglers within striking distance so to relax was not an option.

“During the last half hour the carp came on to feed and most anglers caught a few but by then I knew I had the match in the bag.”

The runner-up was Geoff Stone who poled maggot up to 17 metres off corner peg 6 and weighed-in a creditable 30-3-0 of mostly carp.

Geoff said: "I caught a decent sized carp with my first put-in and just kept going.

“Unfortunately, from then on bites were slow and the capture of decent sized fish even slower.

“At the weigh-in it was obvious that I had caught as many fish as the winner but on the whole, they were considerably smaller.”

Third was match organiser Nick Tomkins who drew to fish peg 28 and for most of the match had the far end of the lake to himself. He poled maggot and caster at a variety of distances and depths and did well to net 21-14-0 of quality carp.

The carp hiding beneath the bridge at peg 40 came on the feed too late for Ted Bethel who poled maggot along the edge of bridge and into the island margins at 13 metres centre for a six carp catch totalling 18-8-0.

The silverfish failed to show in any great number and top of a small weight scoresheet was Ian Cole who poled maggot along the bottom of the far shelf at 9 metres off peg 12 for 4-3-0 of f1’s and skimmers.
