SOUTH WEST DISABLED & OVER 50’S
ACORN FISHERY
Match Pool
Sunday July 18 2010

The capture of six quality carp within the first 30 minutes gave Bill Ferris a perfect start.

Bill poled pellet and paste at 11 metres centre off peg 16 and kept an estimated 15-0-0 weight advantage right up until the last 2 hours when disaster struck.

A huge carp ran off with the top three pole sections belonging to an angler fishing several pegs below the new bridge. The firmly hooked fish set off for the top end of the lake towing the pole sections behind it and ploughed straight through the middle of Bill's’ swim.

Bill said: “I caught very few fish after that, most of them disappeared from the swim completely and never returned.

“I managed to land a few more during the last 30 minutes but most were either very small carp or silvers.”

Bill still managed to weighed-in a winning 62-4-0.

The runner up was Martin Alexander who caught most of his fish late in the match and from the near left, lakeside margins of neighbouring peg 14 with maggot.

Martin said: “I started the match fishing pellet between middle and the far bank but caught nothing until the last two hours of the match when I changed bait and tack.

“I suddenly started catching regularly. At first it was a few small roach followed by perch, chub and finally quality carp. I played my last carp out in extra time after calling “fish on” at the whistle."

Andy Shield came third after taking advice on how to fish the narrowest peg on the lake, peg 9, from Martin Alexander.

Andy said: “Martin told me to leave the catapult in the bag and instead of spraying the bait about, to cup it in close to the far bank.

“I poled a soft pellet over it and by the end of the first hour had started to catch regularly.

“By alternating between a pellet and paste hook bait and while keeping up a steady but light feed, I managed to maintain a steady catch rate right up until the “all out” shout.”

Harry Muir finished in fourth place at Match Pool 12, the first peg past the new bridge.

Harry said: “I tried every bait and every place but fish were nowhere to be seen. It took me 3 hours to catch my first fish.

“With 2 hours of the match still to go I once again poled pellet and paste into the far lakeside margins at 11.5 metres and to my surprise, a five pounder responded.

“From then I caught a carp with every other put-in and weighed-in 36-2-0.”

It was Harry Muir who also captured the runaway carp. He returned the top three pole sections to its owner and the fish back to the lake unharmed.

Result. I, Bill Ferris 62-4-0, Top Peg 16;  2, Martin Alexander 58-4-0, peg 14; 3, Andy Shield 54-2-0, peg 9; 4, Harry Muir 36-2-0, peg 12; 5, Ted Bethel 34-8-0, peg 6; 6, Keith Cooper 31-14-0, peg 10.
