THE LEONARD CHESHIRE HOME
"THE FORGOTTEN CUP"

HUNSTRETE
Withy Pool
Saturdat July 10 2010

Seven residents, escorted by a handful of voluntary carers turned-up to fish for a trophy presented to the Leonard Cheshire Home by the Environment  Agency.

Unfortunately no one turned up to present the trophy which was just as well because although the Timsbury based home remembered to lay on transport for the contestants - they forgot to send the cup.

Nevertheless, Bathampton AA's Keith Pope and his helpers made their guests welcome and then set about making them comfortable at their drawn pegs.  Every contestant and helper was supplied with an identical 3 metre whip and enough bait to last the entire match.

The rules were very simple. Every fish counted as a point regardless of size and the winners would be the pair who caught the most fish in the allotted time of 90 minutes

The winners of the Forgotten Trophy was Rose Froud and her carer for the match, Bathampton AA Coach Dave Burnham, who ran in 15 fish head of their nearest challengers.

Dave said: “There are plenty of silverfish in Withy Pool yet very few people fish for them.

“Most visitors concentrate on catching carp with only a few ever bothering to fish for the lake’s huge head of silverfish."

He continued: “Rose drew to fish point peg 68 – a good peg.

“I threw in a hand full of hemp, tares and a few maggots at the start and almost immediately the fish started to show an interest.

“Within 15 minutes or so we were taking a fish a chuck but then, so were a few other people so we just kept going.”

Neighbouring peg 66 came up with a second best catch for Pete Smith (disabled) and his carer for the match, Jun Terre.

Pete and Jun fished the same as the winners and netted 27 skimmers, roach, rudd and perch.

Joint third was Roy Jeffries (disabled) and carer, Kaoru, and Jason Gold (disabled) and carer, John Proctor with both pairs putting 26 fish safely back into the lake.

Result: 1, Rose Froud & Dave Burnham, Top Peg 68, 42 points; 2, Pete Smith & Jun Terre, 27; 3= Roy Jeffries & Kaoru and Jason Gold & John Proctor, both 26; 5, Jackie Holt & Eddie Gillard, 21; 6, Sam Hale & Kaori, 13; 7, Carol Woodford & Martin Cole, 12.
